The best advice on suitability of items comes from the item manufacturer. If in doubt, check if labelled "dishwasher-safe".
Dishware
- Most everyday dishware is dishwasher-safe.
- Antique or hand-painted china should be washed by hand.
Glassware
- Finish is recommended by leading manufacturers such as Dartington Crystal and Villeroy & Boch.
- Wash lead crystal by hand unless labelled “dishwasher-safe”.
Cutlery
- Rinse off acidic foods like salad dressing or ketchup and mustard as direct and prolonged contact can tarnish your cutlery.
- Wash items containing wood or bone by hand.
Plastics
- Only use dishwasher-safe plastics in a dishwasher.
Cookware
- Stainless steel pans are excellent for automatic dishwashing but aluminium parts may discolour.
- Cast iron pots and pans with wooden handles should be washed by hand.
