The best advice on suitability of items comes from the item manufacturer. If in doubt, check if labelled "dishwasher-safe".

Dishware

  • Most everyday dishware is dishwasher-safe.
  • Antique or hand-painted china should be washed by hand.

Glassware

  • Finish is recommended by leading manufacturers such as Dartington Crystal and Villeroy & Boch.
  • Wash lead crystal by hand unless labelled “dishwasher-safe”.

Cutlery

  • Rinse off acidic foods like salad dressing or ketchup and mustard as direct and prolonged contact can tarnish your cutlery.
  • Wash items containing wood or bone by hand.

Plastics

  • Only use dishwasher-safe plastics in a dishwasher.

Cookware

  • Stainless steel pans are excellent for automatic dishwashing but aluminium parts may discolour.
  • Cast iron pots and pans with wooden handles should be washed by hand.
